How to choose a skateboard helmet

by | May 31, 2021 | Blog, Skateboards

Whether you plan to visit one of the Bay Area’s popular skateboard parks or commute to your summer classes, it is important to wear proper safety gear to protect yourself from potential injuries. There are a lot of different kinds of helmets on the market, but some designs focus more on aesthetics than safety.

How do you know which helmet to choose?

What to look for in a helmet

A helmet is the most important piece of safety gear because it protects you from sustaining a serious head injury in a fall or collision.  The first thing you should do is measure your head. This will help you choose the correct size helmet. Helmets should be snug, but not too tight.

Next, choose a style. Classic helmets are lightweight and comfortable but cover less of your head than some other types. Full helmets are heavier but provide more protection.

Finally, check for certification. Uncertified helmets are cheaper, but will only protect you from minor falls. Certified helmets can prevent more serious injuries, such as concussions.

Features of certified helmets

A helmet with a hard-shell exterior is more durable and reliable than a helmet that uses softer materials. Look for an injection-molded ABS shell attached to a layer of impact absorbent foam.

EPS foam liners are the industry standard for safety. This foam is lightweight and crushes during impact so that energy from a fall or collision dissipates.

Head injuries are the most serious danger of riding a skateboard. Certified helmets may cost you more money, but the added safety they provide is worth it in the long run.
