Are you planning to put your stimulus check toward a down payment on a new car? If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, look for safety features that will help you avoid auto accidents.

Many valuable safety features, such as automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and cameras come standard in newer vehicles. Other features, such as blind spot warning, cost extra.

Based on safety features and crash test results from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), these 5 cars do a top-notch job at keeping you and your family safe. I included a mix of sizes and price ranges to suit a variety of needs and budgets. Buckle up!

1. Honda Civic (Hatchback). According to IIHS, the trusty Civic gets good ratings for “crashworthiness,” which means its built strong. Safety features include forward-collision warning, child seat anchors, and lane departure warning and prevention. The high ratings apply to 4-door hatchbacks and sedans but not the Type R performance model. The Honda Insight also ranked high for safety.

2. Subaru Impreza. The rugged Subaru’s impressive suite of safety features includes forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control, among others. It scored high in all IIHS crash tests.

Other safe small cars:

  • Hyundai Veloster
  • Mazda 3
  • Subaru Crosstrek
  • Toyota Corolla hatchback and sedan

3. Nissan Altima (4-Door Sedan). Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection comes standard in the Altima. So does forward collision warning. Blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, and lane departure prevention are available as optional features. The SV models offer advanced features such as blind spot monitoring, high-beam assist, and more.

4. Acura TLX. The plush Acura earned stellar crash test scores from IIHS, as well as high marks for child safety. Standard features are impressive: adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, front collision warning, and road departure mitigation. An advanced passenger-side airbag also makes its 2021 debut.

Other safe mid-size cars:

  • Honda Accord
  • Hyundai Sonata
  • Mazda 5
  • Toyota Camry

5. Audi A6. In the large luxury car category, the Audi A6 gets positive reviews for its driver-assistance features. Standard safety features include automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.

6. Ford Edge. The Edge comes with a generous standard safety package that includes a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, post-collision braking, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high beams, rear cross traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. If you want additional features, such as a 180-degree camera system, they’re yours (for a fee).

Other safe SUVs:

  • Mazda CX-3
  • Hyundai Tucson
  • Ford Explorer
  • Kia Telluride
  • Cadillac XT6
  • Toyota RAV4
